Digital Passport Photos for Online Applications
Most countries now let you upload a digital passport photo instead of mailing a print. The rules are the same as printed photos — exact crop, head size and background — plus pixel and file-size limits that vary by country.
| Country | Pixel dimensions | File limits | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 600×600 – 1200×1200 px (square) | Under 240 KB | JPEG |
| United Kingdom | At least 600×750 px | — | JPEG |
| Canada | 50×70 mm equivalent | — | JPEG |
| Australia | 35×45 mm equivalent | — | JPEG / PNG |
Why digital is replacing print
Digital submission removes the two biggest points of failure in the traditional process: bad printing (home inkjet, wrong paper) and bad sizing at the print shop. The file either meets the pixel spec or it doesn't, and online application systems validate it before you pay. The US State Department, HMPO, IRCC and Australia's DFA all accept digital uploads through their online portals.
How to make a digital passport photo at home
- Take a photo against a plain background in even daylight, following your country's expression and background rules.
- Crop it to the official spec — size and head height, which is the part most generic croppers get wrong.
- Remove the background if it isn't already plain.
- Export at the pixel dimensions and file-size limit for your country.
- Upload it to the application portal and check the preview — most portals flag problems before submission.
The free tool on this site does steps 2–4 entirely in your browser: the photo is never uploaded to a server, and the crop enforces both the frame size and the head-height window for your country.
